We conduct research into the earliest stages of mammalian life – from oogenesis to early post-implantation embryonic development, using the mouse as a model organism. Our research topics include the mechanisms underlying oocyte maturation and the differentiation of the first cell lineages in the embryo. Furthermore, we study the regulation of embryo size, the impact of physiological and environmental factors on oocyte and embryo quality, and the search for novel methods to assess this quality.

The impact of our research

Our projects hold not only fundamental scientific value but also practical application potential. They support the advancement of reproductive medicine and animal biotechnology, with a particular focus on assisted reproductive technologies. Furthermore, part of our work is interdisciplinary, combining cell and molecular biology techniques with modern optical physics.

Looking for a place to do your thesis? We invite you to join the Department of Embryology at the UW! By joining our projects, you will become a co-author of discoveries and scientific publications. You will learn to work with laboratory animals and gain hands-on experience with a wide range of techniques in embryology, cell biology, and molecular biology. These diverse skills will prepare you for a career in academia as well as positions in the biotechnology sector and fertility clinics. We also accept students for literature-based Bachelor’s theses.
